CONTEMPORARY PRECIOUS
Comuzo, LA

Inscribed on the back with the names of the two artists who collaborated on this piece, this simple, representational brooch demonstrates the clever wit of the makers, renditioning a checkerboard floored room with a table, scroll and window. The piece makes use of optical tricks to flatten out a three-dimensional scene, reducing its size while creating an illusion of depth. My mother was very fond of literary allusions, as she herself was a writer, and no doubt found this brooch a bold statement on her occupation.
