Lichen Brooch by Judith Kinghorn of oxidized silver and gold, 2009.

Judith Kinghorn

CONTEMPORARY PRECIOUS
Minneapolis, MN

Judith Kinghorn first learned how to fuse precious metals from Harold O’Connor, and since then she has become one of the finest contemporary jewelers in the craft show circuit. Not only does she make deeply intricate jewelry, but her renditions of the natural world transcend the flowers and flora that she depicts. She uses fused oxidized silver to provide a stark contrast to the brilliant, warm gold that she employs as an accent.

My mother was close friends with Judith, and you could always find them smiling and laughing away at a table during the preview night of the Philadelphia Museum of Art Craft Show, or talking conspiratorially at her booth at the Smithsonian Craft Show. Ornament partnered with Kinghorn for the cover article for Volume 34 No. 2, which featured a sensual bouquet of her floral jewelry.
