Hopi Katsina pendant by the late Lawrence Saufkie of overlay silver, with dimensional katsina, and handmade chain.

Lawrence Saufkie

NATIVE AMERICAN
Second Mesa, AZ

The late Lawrence Saufkie was a well-known Hopi jeweler working with the overlay technique, which is when a thin silver overlay is laid over the surface of another sheet of silver, which is then worked with stamping and chasing through the openings in the overlay. Saufkie’s jewelry is bold, clean, and representational, here depicting a Katsina spirit.
