Man in the Maze Bracelet by unknown Hopi artist, initials GUL, of fabricated silver, overlay technique.

Man in the Maze Bracelet

NATIVE AMERICAN
Probably Hopi, AZ

This bracelet features a popular Hopi and Navajo motif, the Man in the Maze. Part of the emergence story of the Papago tribe in Central California, the figure represents birth and the beginning of life, while the center of the maze represents the end of life’s journey. This motif is frequently depicted in Hopi overlay jewelry, which is the technique utilized in this piece. Carolyn wore this bracelet often, with its comfortable design and poignant message. Although we are not certain of the artist’s name, the initials inscribed upon the back spell out GUL.
